The return of Jim McGuinness as Donegal manager has caused a huge amount of excitement within the county.

He takes over a team that has underperformed over the last couple of years, one that is in need of quite a bit of evolution if it is to compete among the best sides in the country once again. Of course, that is a fairly similar scenario to the one he inherited when he first stepped into this role back in 2011.

We all know what happened there. McGuinness would quickly transform Donegal into an elite inter-county team, going on to win three provincial titles and one All-Ireland during his four-year tenure.

They have never quite managed to have that level of sustained success since then, although they will be hoping that the former manager's return will bring about a change in fortunes on the pitch.

Jim McGuinness going to great lengths to find new Donegal talent

Jim McGuinness expects the best out of his players when it comes to their preparation, a standard he also holds himself too.

Ahead of his return as Donegal boss, he is leaving no stone unturned in his attempts to put the best team possible on the pitch in 2024. Speaking to Donegal Live, he said he and his coaching team have watched essentially every player in the county during the club championship in their attempts to unearth some new talent.

We have players to find, a style of play to work on and we have a lot of things we need to get our head around over the next number of weeks and months.

We are still trawling the county and we identified a lot of players through the club championship.

I suppose there was a lot of criticism over the championship from the amount of games they were playing for not much gain.

But the good thing from my point of view was that there were a lot of games to go and see. And there is not really a player in the county that we have not had a chance to look at...

We will focus on Division Two first and foremost and there are a lot of good teams in there as well and big managers too.

But our priority is to get a team ready for the Ulster Championship and to use the league to try and get promotion if we can and if not, get a good foundation for the next few years.

He will be hoping those endeavours bear fruit next year, with a testing league and championship campaign on the horizon.

Jim McGuinness will no doubt be confident that he get the team fit and firing in the months ahead.
