Offaly Football Final Ends In Drama With Niall McNamee The Hero
By PJ Browne Updated

A goal from Niall McNamee with the last kick of the match sent the Offaly Senior Football Championship final to a replay.

The game finished 1-8 each at O'Connor Park.

Three minutes into injury time, McNamee found the back of the net with what Rhode manager Malachy McNulty called "a moment of class".

"I have goosebumps," McNulty told RTÉ Radio 1.

"It was a rollercoaster ride. We felt the momentum was turning in our favour in the last quarter.

"There was a resolute Tullamore defence, and it was hard to put the scores away.

"Niall McNamee stepped up. It was a little bit of interplay that worked really well for us. I think he might have a had a couple of inches to aim at, and he hit the ball in the back of the net. And so we go again for a replay.

"He was kept relatively quiet today. He was marshalled well. It just takes a moment of class, and he produced it today - some man."

Tullamore had led by a goal at the break and by five points at the second waterbreak. However, McNulty felt the game was not out of reach. That was despite Rhode being reduced to 14 players in the first half with the sending off of Alan McNamee.

"In the final quarter I turned to my two selectors, and I said, 'The momentum has swung here. We're going at them, and they seem to be hanging in, waiting for the final whistle to come'.

"Was the goal a just reward for that? I suppose it was, yeah."
