'There Were Really Three Players Singled Out - Seamus O'Shea, Aidan O'Shea And Alan Dillon'

'We provide great entertainment in Mayo - whether it's on or off the pitch,' said David Brady on Off The Ball on Thursday evening before his discussion regarding the explosive Pat Holmes and Noel Connelly interview in Saturday's Irish Independent was cut short.

Brady said that that the former Mayo joint managers' words cut 'to the bone' and that the interview could split the county.

I'm nearly sick to death talking about Mayo football, but there's always something. Whether it's September or December.

This time last year we were talking about Mayo management, the heave and new management coming in. This is different and for the first time we've seen from a media context, two managers coming out and saying what in their mind has happened; saying why it happened and let's cut to the chase and who's responsible.

My fear is that this could divide a county that has been united for 60-odd years since Mayo last won it. There's never been any division, but slowly and surely I feel the division starting. What was printed from Noel Connelly and Pat Holmes point of view, they felt it needed to be printed.

From a players context, I think it's going to be a tough one to swallow because whatever pressure was there has doubled from last year and I think there's now even more pressure again.

Brady believes that there should be no public response from the players.

Stephen Rochford needs to say 'This is a directive. Whatever has been written or said about you is not commented on and won't be.' It's gone past a joke now. It just needs to stop from all angles and that call will be made on the team holiday.

There'll be nothing said in any way shape or form or context the Mayo players. There have been certain individuals who have been dealt a hard blow. It's on their shoulders, but they're man enough and talented enough to say 'right, it's part and parcel of playing gaelic football at the highest level'.

In Brady's mind, three players, in particular, were singled out in the interview. Seamus O'Shea for stating his preference for clubmate Rob Hennelly being first choice goalkeeper ahead of David Clarke.  Alan Dillon for questioning why Andy Moran was starting ahead of him.

Numerous instances of differences between Holmes and Connelly and Aidan O'Shea were highlighted - including his annoyance with being prevented from appearing on the first season of 'The Toughest Trade'.

There were really three players singled out - Seamus O'Shea, Aidan O'Shea and Alan Dillon. I think everyone should have been singled out. They all took a collective decision. They're mature adults.

I don't know what Aidan O'Shea is like but it's a slight on his character.

I would say that Seamus O'Shea would say 'lookit, David, it was nothing personal.' I played in midfield and I played better with Ballina goalkeepers - because I knew them. They knew my runs and knew me better.

The former Mayo footballer states that players opinions should be taken into account but in the end, team selection should be 'none of their business' and that no manager, club or county, would 'entertain' such intervention from players.

I don't think any manager - club or county - would entertain it.

It's unprecedented. Never have you really seen ex-managers or players coming out and saying this is what happened in the sanctuary of the dressing room or a team meeting.

Do people need to know? Maybe they do.
