In order to unlock the Bard's Crossing Treasure Map, you will need to reach level 10 online. You can move through the levels by playing the game online and earning XP. Once you reach level 10, you will receive mail which contains the Bard's Crossing Treasure Map. This can be picked up at any of the post offices throughout the map.

Once you have the map in your possession, take it out of your inventory and view it. You will be instructed to travel to Bard's Crossing, just north of Flat Iron Lake.

There are four possible areas that the treasure may spawn. They are marked on the map below.

Once you arrive at each of the locations, enter detective mode. If the chest is in the area, it will appear as gold. It will usually be obstructed by an object, such as a large rock or bushes.
