Red Dead Redemption 2 has been out for a little over a week now but that doesn’t mean that people have the mechanics of it down to a tee. One of the mechanics that gamers seem to be having trouble with is how to clean guns in Red Dead Redemption 2. It's hardly surprising. No other developer has gone to such lengths to make the world feel as alive as Rockstar Studios have done with Red Dead Redemption 2.

The game uses a degradation system where the more you use an item the worse the performance will become. Weapon stats, like damage, recoil and accuracy will suffer if you don’t clean them regularly enough.

Thankfully, Rockstar, in their infinite wisdom have made it easy for players to clean their guns. One way to do so is to head to your local gunsmith and purchase gun oil. If you don’t want to pay for it, there are other ways to acquire it. You can loot a body and find some, rob a home or if you want to be truly poetic you could hold up the gunsmith at gunpoint.

Once you’ve bought it, it’ll be added to your inventory wheel. Most players will favour a certain gun, whether that’s the Lancaster rifle, revolver or double-barrelled shotgun. Pull up the weapon wheel and any firearm that has red bars along its stats will need to be cleaned.

Once you select a soiled gun, all you need to do is press X on the Xbox or ‘Square’ on the PS4 and Bob’s your uncle. Your gun is now in tiptop shape. Upgrades are also available for almost every weapon. To improve your loadout, go to your local gunsmith and see what can be buffed.

There are 4-5 upgradable parts available for every gun: the barrel, scope, wrap, iron sights and stock. Upgrading these will improve the stats of your guns except the wrap, which is more of an aesthetic upgrade.

Gun accuracy and fire-rate vary from weapon to weapon, so keeping your gun clean will help avoid a lot of trouble as you progress through the game.
