The Alternate Ending To The Star Wars: Revenge Of The Sith Game Was Mindblowing

For many Star Wars fans, the 2005 film Revenge of the Sith has a special place in their hearts.

After the original trilogy was released in the late '70s and early '80s, fans of the series had to wait over 15 years for a new film before a prequel trilogy was finally kicked off with The Phantom Menace in 1999.

In truth, the prequel trilogy varies pretty wildly in quality. There are some brilliant moments - Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson) and Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) taking on Darth Maul in Episode I stands out - but they have been much maligned over the years for their script, storyline, and slow pace.

Episode III - Revenge of the Sith- mostly avoids the worst of the prequels' problems, and the (SPOILERS AHEAD FOR THIS 18-YEAR OLD MOVIE) downfall of Anakin Skywalker at the end of the movie is one of the most genuinely heartwrenching moments across the entire now-nine-film saga.

One Twitter user, however, has uncovered the alternate ending to the tie-in video game for Revenge of the Sith - and its a pretty extraordinary break from what fans will remember from the 2005 movie.

After falling to the dark side over the course of the trilogy, Anakin Skywalker attempts to eliminate one of his final Jedi threats - none other than his master Obi-Wan Kenobi.

As they duel on the volcanic planet of Mustafar, Anakin attempts an audacious leap over Obi-Wan, only to be chopped down (quite literally) and left to die a painful, fiery death by a teary Kenobi (Anakin is eventually rescued by Emperor Palpatine and assumes the iconic suit of Darth Vader).

It's one of the most iconic moments in Star Wars - but what if it had gone differently?

Twitter user Jacob (@/jtimsuggs) shared video this week of the alternate ending that came on the PS2 and Xbox versions of the game - and it is pretty mindblowing.

In the alternate ending, Anakin pulls off his leap over Obi-Wan, and immediately kills his master by piercing through Kenobi's chest with his lightsaber.

It's a remarkably dark moment - and what comes next is almost as shocking.

After returning to his ship, Anakin is congratulated by his new master, the Sith lord Palpatine, who tells him the galaxy is now theirs - before Anakin proceeds to kill him too in the same manner, using the new lightsaber gifted to him by Palpatine.

Of course, given the film of Revenge of the Sith was released as a prequel, there's no way that it could have ended with both Obi-Wan and Palpatine dead - but the ending to the video game is equal parts shocking and fun, as a window into what could potentially have been done differently in the Star Wars universe.
