While his form has dipped on occasion over the last couple of years, there is no doubt that Shane Lowry remains one of the best players in professional golf when he is at his best.

The Offaly man has consistently performed on the biggest stage in recent times, especially in majors. Top 25 finishes in golf's four flagship events have become commonplace for Lowry, achieving that feat in nine of his last 12 starts in those tournaments.

Of course, he does have won major triumph under his belt after his incredible victory at The Open back in 2019.

Golf: Recent birthday led to some doubts for Shane Lowry

Now 37-years old, Shane Lowry is reaching a point in his career where some players may find that their best days are behind them. Quite a few players certainly struggle to play their best golf as they approach their 40s.

Speaking to Mail Sport, Lowry admitted that his recent birthday did lead to some doubts about his own future prospects in the sport. However, he said he still believes that his best days could still be ahead of him, with some big goals in mind for the coming seasons.

I spoke to my coach about it this morning. You certainly do start to question yourself. I mean, 37 is not a big birthday. I know it's not old. But you don't know if your best is behind you or ahead, do you?

You always have to believe it's ahead of you, because that drives you, but it does enter your head. You know what, though, I do think it is ahead of me. And the last little patch has helped with that...

There are certain things on my bucket list that I've ticked off. But like I said, the past few weeks have given me a bit more self-belief that my best golf is ahead...

There's a Green Jacket, that's for sure. An Olympic medal would also be nice and an away Ryder Cup maybe. So nice easy things!

To be honest, if I finished right now I'd have to be pretty happy with what I have got, wouldn't I?

Look, I'd love to win another major. But I always say regardless of what happens I've got one and it's more than what other people have got.

Shane Lowry will play his first major of 2024 later this week, with The Masters set to get underway on Thursday. He has a good recent record at Augusta, finishing in the top 25 every year since 2020, including a third-placed finish in 2022.

That should give him confidence that the green jacket could be within his reach by the time the weekend rolls around. At this best, he certainly has the golf game to compete with the rest of the field.
