The man made history in UFC this year. And now, Conor McGregor is Ireland's 'most admired sports star'.
PSG Sponsorship ran a survey of 1,000 people to gauge the nation's attitude towards sport. The Dubliner got 16% of the vote in the Most Admired Sports Star category, topping the poll ahead of Katie Taylor on 14% with Paul and Gary O'Donovan in third on 8% .
Almost one in three 18 to 34-year-olds named McGregor the sports star they most admire but he isn’t as popular with the over 35 demographic.
The Skibbereen rowers had to console themselves with the Most Memorable Sporting Moment of the Year. 23% of the public vote went to their post-race interview at the Olympics. Robbie Brady's goal against Italy got the nation on their feet and that came second with 14%.
Elsewhere, the Irish Rugby team was named Team of the Year for the third year running, gaining a whopping 31% of the vote. Dundalk's European exploits put them in second with 15% and the Irish football team completed the top three.
The victory over the All Blacks at Soldier Field was the Most Popular Sporting Moment of the Year. But despite rugby taking two of the top awards, soccer remains the most popular sport. 21% of the public preferred the beautiful game, as it remained Ireland's Favourite Sport for the fourth year running.
Other highlights of the survey showed that people are most looking forward to the 2017 Six Nations.
