The most decorated player in the British football history Ryan Giggs has questioned the mentality of England’s central midfield players.
Giggs witnessed England secure qualification for the World Cup last Thursday during their limp display over Slovenia and before their match against Lithuania yesterday, he wondered were their midfielders blinded by fear instead of taking risks.
A Harry Kane penalty towards the end of the first half was enough to secure all three points as England beat Lithuania 1-0 in the Vilniaus stadium.
Leicester City's Harry Maguire and Tottenham’s Harry Winks were given their debut in an experimental side by Gareth Southgate. The manager moved away from a back four to a back three but it was more of the same from England as they struggled to carve open a side who currently sit 105 places below them in the world rankings.
The former Wales captain questioned whether the English midfield play with fear or not,
Like Wrighty [Ian Wright] said, pass it forward. When I played midfield, the first thing I thought about was passing forward. Where can I hurt the opposition?
Is it a little dink forward? Is it play into the centre forward's feet? That's my first thought. Is it this England midfield's thought or is it, I better not give the ball away?
