Munster Star Clears Up Any Doubts About His International Future

While rules relating to limiting overseas players at Irish rugby provinces are in place for good reason, they can make life difficult at times for the clubs involved. Munster have found that out the hard way in recent times.

They were essentially forced to choose between Jean Kleyn and RG Snyman in recent months, with the former's decision to link up with South Africa for last year's World Cup meaning he was no longer eligible for Ireland. As a result, it became all but impossible to keep two overseas second rows in the squad. Snyman would agree a deal with Leinster soon after.

They could now be in a similar position with another one of their squad members.

Munster star clears up doubts about international future

Antoine Frisch moved to Munster in 2022, with the centre viewed as a future Ireland international at the time. Born and raised in France, he qualified to play in green due to his Irish-born grandmother. He would even make three appearances for Emerging Ireland that year.

However, international opportunities were not forthcoming over the next couple of season, with Andy Farrell having no shortage of options in that centre position.

Frisch would then surprisingly be called up to the France squad during this year's Six Nations. He would not make an appearance in the tournament, meaning he is still eligible to play for both countries.

In saying that, he has no doubts about his international future.

Speaking to L'Equipe, Antoine Frisch said that while an Ireland call up may have been a goal in the past, he now wants to pursue a test career with France.

The possibility of playing for Ireland may have been on my mind when I arrived at Munster... but I have been in contact with Fabien Galthié for a long time and this contact has never been interrupted.

And from the moment I was called into the group, it became very clear to me.

It is expected that the 27-year old will be included in the France squad for their tour to Argentina this summer.

This puts Munster in a difficult position. As Frisch would no longer be eligible for Ireland, it makes keeping him at Thomond Park a far more difficult prospect.

The player has a contract that runs until 2025, although it has been suggested that a number of French clubs could look to sign him as soon as this summer.

It certainly seems as though his links to Irish rugby are quickly coming to a close.
