Vodacom Bulls coach Jake White has apologised for the treatment Saracens player Owen Farrell received during the Champions Cup meeting between the two sides yesterday, a game which the South African side would win on a 27-16 scoreline.

Coming into the game having won all three of their home games in the URC this season, the Bulls would have fancied their chances of winning their opening fixture in this tournament against their English opponents.

That would prove to be the case, emerging victorious on the back of 12 points from Johann Goosen. They were also helped by a red card given to Billy Vunipola and yellow cards handed to both Alex Goode and Maro Itoje.

However, they have come in for some criticism over the treatment their fans gave to a member of the opposition.

Bulls coach apologises for Owen Farrell treatment

Owen Farrell recently announced that he would be stepping away from the England setup for the 2024 Six Nations, citing a need to 'prioritise his and his family's mental wellbeing'.

The player had come in for some heavy criticism in the buildup to the Rugby World Cup earlier this year, with the treatment he received clearly taking its toll.

This did not deter the Bulls fans from targeting the 32-year old throughout this game, booing him whenever he touched the ball.

Speaking after the game, Bulls coach Jake White apologised for the way his fans treated Owen Farrell throughout the fixture.

I am apologising for all the booing of Owen Farrell. It is not who we [the Bulls] are.

I don’t understand all the negativity. He is an unbelievable player.

What he has achieved in England is phenomenal.

I am disappointed [about the booing]. I wanted the people to enjoy the fact that they get to see him play.

You equate that to watching Tiger Woods play golf and [Michael] Jordan playing basketball. I must apologise, because it [booing] is not really who we are.

We will address that.

The Bulls will face Lyon away from home in their second game of the competition, while Saracens will hist Connacht in what already looks like a huge game after both sides lost their opener.
