When news broke that the original cast of Friends had signed up for a reunion special, fans of the show got very excited. Many had long been craving a one-off special or movie in order to see Ross, Rachel, Joey, Chandler, Phoebe, and Monica together one last time.
The special is set to air on HBO Max, a new streaming service from the American broadcasting giants that drops next month. While it had been said that the Friends reunion would be part of the service's launch, that has now been pushed back due to the coronavirus.
In a statement yesterday, HBO also reiterated that the reunion was not a new episode of the show, but instead an unscripted special where the actors would be playing themselves:
As was previously reported, production is delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This means that the special will not be available on the streamer on Day 1 of launch. But it is coming...
There are loads of great surprises in store and lots of rare behind-the-scenes footage they are eager to share. We will keep you informed as plans solidify and once we have a firm premiere date.”
Lastly, in order to avoid any misunderstanding about what this special is, we want to make it very clear that this is not a new, original episode of the series. The cast will be appearing as themselves, not as their beloved characters.
This will be bad news for those who had hoped to see the actors reprise their six iconic roles one final time, but we're sure it will be an entertaining watch nonetheless.
