Oliver Callan will be Ryan Tubridy's replacement as presenter of the Nine O'Clock Show on RTÉ Radio One, it has been confirmed.

Tubridy vacated the slot last summer amid controversy over his earnings at the national broadcaster, leading to Callan presenting the weekday morning show on an interim basis.

It has now been confirmed that the comedian and impressionist will be taking the reins on a full-time basis, with RTÉ's decision announced on The Brendan O Connor Show on Saturday morning.

"I am really excited about it," said Callan. "I suppose I am an accidental presenter in many ways. But there you go, sure I will give it a lash, and we will see what happens.

"I actually said yes even when I didn't know. I am glad I didn't rush into it either."

Callan will be paid €150,000 a year over the course of his two-year contract, a figure which is significantly lower than Tubridy's take-home pay during his stint at the desk.

He also indicated that he plans to continue with his Callan's Kicks satirical show, despite his major new role.

"We will see how it goes," the 43-year-old told O'Connor. "I am confident I can juggle the two. It is tiring but when you love what you do, it is not impossible."

Since leaving RTÉ, Tubridy took several months out of the limelight before landing a presenting role with Virgin Media UK.

The Ryan Tubridy Show is also available to listeners here in Ireland as it is simultaneously broadcast on Dublin's Q102 on weekdays from 10am until 1pm.

A Sunday edition can also be heard on Cork's 96FM, LMFM and Limerick's Live 95.

"We are incredibly proud of Ryan," said a statement from Tubridy's management NK upon the broadcaster's relocation to London.

"His talents, strength, professionalism and resilience are to be applauded. Take a bow Mr Tubridy, you are wonderful and inspirational.
