It's a little more slim pickings for films on TV tonight but there's still plenty on offer for almost all tastes (we're still tragically short on comedies.) Two truly great movies headline the offerings and the good news is they are more spread out than normal, meaning you can fit both of them in if you've got the evening free.

As usual, all of these films are available on non subscription channels, though may not be on all platforms.

Films on TV tonight:

Double Indemnity: TCM (Virgin 327, Sky 315), 6.40PM

Year: 1944

Cast: Fred MacMurray, Barbara Stanwyck, Edward G. Robinson

Plot: An insurance representative lets himself be talked by a seductive housewife into a murder/insurance fraud scheme that arouses the suspicion of an insurance investigator. (IMDB)

Rating: 97% (Rotten Tomatoes)

Barbara Stanwyck is the classic Femme Fatale in one of the all time great films.

The Adventures of Tintin: Film Four, 6.50PM

Year: 2011

Cast: Jamie Bell, Andy Serkis, Daniel Craig

Plot: Intrepid reporter Tintin and Captain Haddock set off on a treasure hunt for a sunken ship commanded by Haddock's ancestor. (IMDB)

Rating: 74% (Rotten Tomatoes)

Steven Spielberg directed and Peter Jackson produced, this animated film might not be Toy Story standard but it's certainly worth a watch.

Plot: The Fantastic Four learn that they aren't the only super-powered beings in the universe when they square off against the powerful Silver Surfer and the planet-eating Galactus. (IMDB)

This is an awful film but you'll probably enjoy it.

Frost/Nixon: Sky Atlantic, 9.00PM

Year: 2008

Cast: Frank Langella, Michael Sheen, Kevin Bacon

Plot: A dramatic retelling of the post-Watergate television interviews between British talk-show host David Frost and former president Richard Nixon. (IMDB)

Rating: 93% (Rotten Tomatoes)

The best of the films on TV tonight is Ron Howard's depiction of David Frost's famous interview with Richard Nixon three years after his resignation from the American presidency. Brilliant performances from Michael Sheen and Frank Langella add to the drama in this unlikely success.

The Dead Pool: TCM, 9.00PM

Year: 1988

Cast: Clint Eastwood, Liam Neeson, Patricia Clarkson

Plot: Inspector "Dirty" Harry Callahan must stop a sick secret contest to murder local celebrities, which includes himself as a target. (IMDB)

Rating: 57% (Rotten Tomatoes)

Not to be confused with Deadpool! The fifth and final Dirty Harry movie, and far from the best. But it's still a Dirty Harry movie. And there's a nice turn from a young, ponytailed Liam Neeson, and a very young Jim Carrey!

Contraband: Sky One, 10.00PM

Year: 2012

Cast: Mark Wahlberg, Giovanni Ribisi, Kate Beckingsale

Plot: To protect his brother-in-law from a drug lord, a former smuggler heads to Panama to score millions of dollars in counterfeit bills. (IMDB)

Rating: 52% (Rotten Tomatoes)

The better of two Mark Wahlberg options for you tonight (The Gambler, Film Four, 9.00PM), this is a flawed action movie but very watchable.
