Chris Algieri won the WBO welterweight title last night by beating the champ, Ruslan Provodnikov, by way of a judges decision, but what made the underdog's victory even more impressive was the eye injury he fought the entire bout with.
In the opening round Algieri took a strong left hook from the former champion, knocking him to the floor. It was this shot that caused his right eye to swell, and by the end of the fight, the eye had closed over completely. Despite this, Algieri managed to overcome and take the victory on a split decision.
