Kildare native, Dennis Hogan, has captured the IBO light-middleweight title, after defeating the UK's Sam Eggington.

The fight, which took place in Australia's Newcastle Entertainment Centre, was won by a majority decision of 114-114 and 116-112 x2.

An ecstatic Hogan, who has previously fought for more prestigious WBC and WBO titles, said after the fight:

I've been through the biggest obstacles. Winning this is a sign for everybody to keep persisting, keep believing. You can f***ing do it.

While the IBO is not recognised by the 'big four' sanctioning bodies, it is a remarkable achievement from Hogan, with many of the greatest fighters of all-time holding IBO belts (Floyd Mayweather, Manny Paquiao, Roy Jones Jr., Wladimir Klitschko, and Lennox Lewis to name but a few).

Speaking before the fight, Hogan saw this bout as effectively being his last chance saloon in boxing.

"I don't really see any way back into contention again after this or whether even I want to do it to be fair," said Hogan.

"I have kids, the life of a fighter is stressful and I'm not getting any younger. It's a stressful life, you've got to be an entrepreneur as well as a combat sports fighter. There's a lot of stress involved and I've got kids to be there for too so it's now or never now at this point."

Cork fighter Spike O'Sullivan has called for a fight against the winner of Hogan vs Eggington, and Hogan has proposed what would be a sensational bout on the potential Katie Taylor card at Croke Park

"Spike O'Sullivan has called for a fight with the winner of this one. Me and Spike are very respectful to each other, we get on very well and send messages of support to each other.

"He called out the winner of this and he also said if Boxxer had of won that purse bid for Eggington, he was going to fight on the undercard to call out the winner after the fight so he's there ready to go.

"There's a fight there ready to be made if Eddie [Hearn] wanted to do it in Croke Park if Katie gets her fight there."
