One man who is not impressed with the frenzy around Jamie Vardy's run of goals in consecutive games is RTÉ panelist Johnny Giles.

The former Manchester United and Leeds midfielder believes that the buzz around Jamie Vardy's goal against Manchester United, which broke Ruud Van Nistelrooy's Premier League record of 10 but is still short of Irishman Jimmy Dunne's English football record of 12, is disrespectful, and is a result of Sky Sports insisting that records only began in 1992.

Speaking on Off The Ball on Thursday night, Giles argued that just because it happened long ago, it doesn't mean that the goals don't count.

The way Sky go on, the records only started in 1992. It’s very disrespectful to the players who have records like Jimmy Dunne.

Just because he was playing a long time ago doesn’t mean the records don’t count, but that’s Sky.

For Giles, this isn't just about Vardy's Premier League record. He also suggested that Alan Shearer being the first player to score 100 Premier League goals for two clubs saw an old record totally ignored as well:

Jimmy Greaves did that in the 60's and 70's. He scored over 100 goals for Chelsea and then scored over 100 goals for Tottenham and he doesn't get a mention. That's wrong.

The history of football is there, Sky didn't create football.

It's clear that Giles is fed up of Sky's lack of acknowledgement of what happened in English football before 1992, but also clear is that he doesn't expect it to change any time soon.
