Derry are through to the semi-finals of the All-Ireland football championship for a second successive year after defeating Cork in Sunday's quarter-final at Croke Park.

It was not an easy game on the eye, with a lack of quality in the play and a particularly dour first half testing the patience of football fans up and down the country.

For Derry, it will not matter how they won it, and they will be satisfied with their ability to grind out a result under tough pressure from a spirited Cork side.

Their star man Shane McGuigan, however, was not firing on all cylinders on Sunday afternoon, and Kerry legend Tomás Ó Sé fears that pressure will be building on the Derry full forward ahead of their semi-final in two weeks' time.

Derry v Cork: Tomás Ó Sé predicts pressure building on Shane McGuigan

There's no denying that Shane McGuigan has been one of the finest performers in the country this season.

McGuigan is the top scorer in the football championship thus far, and was once again pivotal as Derry marched to a second successive Ulster title earlier in the season.

His performance in the quarter-final win over Cork, however, was not his finest outing in a Derry jersey. McGuigan failed to score from play during the 70 minutes, and missed an injury-time penalty which would have made the margin of victory more comfortable than the ultimate 1-12 to 1-08 scoreline.

Speaking after the game on RTÉ, Tomás Ó Sé said that, though there is no reason to panic, Derry and McGuigan will know improvements are vital if they are to reach a first All-Ireland final in 30 years.

After fellow pundit Lee Keegan joked that McGuigan was indeed "human" after his excellent performances all year, Ó Sé gave his two cents on the Slaughtneil man.

Ó Sé agreed with Keegan that the odd off day from Derry and McGuigan was to be expected - but nonetheless said that both would need to improve for the sterner tests ahead of Derry in the championship:

Last year, it was said that Derry flew into the semi-finals. This year, I think they'll have work to do, after today.

In fairness, any time this year up north when there's been pressure on him...there'll be pressure on him for the next game, there'll be huge pressure on the fact that he didn't have one of his normal games.

The semi-final will be a massive game for him.

What they threw up there today won't be good enough [in the semi-final].

Derry will face Kerry, Dublin or Mayo in the semi-finals of the All-Ireland championship in two weeks.
