Limerick manager John Kiely was unhappy with what he felt was inconsistent refereeing by James Owens during his side's epic draw with Cork at Pairc Ui Chaoimh on Saturday night.

Despite being reduced to 14 men in the first half and Patrick Horgan scoring what looking like a dagger goal, Limerick fought back with Kyle Hayes firing over an equalising point with the clock in the red.

Speaking to RTÉ Sport immediately after the game, Kiely said Aaron Gillane's 26th minute red card was "a joke" but was more measured with other media.

He told The Limerick Leader that he had not yet watched a replay of the incident but thought it a strange situation that Cork corner-back Sean O'Donoghue was booked for the incident but Gillane was sent-off.

Kiely also spoke of a late first half incident involving his corner-back Richie English which he felt was insufficiently dealt with by the officials.

We had a situation at the other end of the field where our player Richie English and I can tell you, I feel like issuing a photograph of the state of his rib cage after what was done. It was worse than what happened at the other end of the field, I can assure you that. There was no card issued in that situation so it was inconsistent.

I know that lads have a tough job refereeing the games. It is very difficult. There’s a lot happening, you’ve to get up and down the field but I just think what’s good for the goose is good for the gander. But listen at the end of the day we’re not looking for players to be sent-off on either side. We want all the players on the field for as long as possible. I just think the first situation could have been dealt with more common sense.
