What's the perfect way to get a bit of hype for a fight (or any sporting contest for that matter) these days? Send out a few tweets and watch the interest pile up. Cathal Pendred completed a controversial win over Sean Spencer at UFC Boston, soon to be UFC star CM Punk had his say on Twitter, Pendred responded and all of a sudden there's some fight buzz.
So could we actually see Pendred being lined up as Punk's first UFC opponent. According to the Boston born Irishman, he'd certainly like the opportunity.
Asked if he would go toe to toe with the former WWE star, Pendred responded 'I would 100 percent fight him'.
My name is linked to him because I opened my mouth about a possible fight. But I’ve recently learned that if you announce things the UFC haven’t officially announced yet you can get yourself in trouble. So I’m keeping tight-lipped about that now.
And although the aforementioned Twitter tête-a-tête was less than civil, Pendred is fully on board with Punk joining the UFC and expanding it's popularity. If he could be the one to welcome him to the Octagon, then all the better.
I think CM Punk getting signed is a great thing for the sport. He’s a massive personality, not just in the United States but globally. He’s going to bring a lot more attention to the sport. He’s going to bring new fans to the sport. I think the person that gets to fight him is going to be very fortunate in that they’re going to get new fans and a lot of attention as well.
