While the first two seasons of Netflix's Narcos were predominantly focused on the rise of Pablo Escobar and the Medellín Cartel, the show cleverly moved in a different direction over the most recent seasons.

Season three switched the focus to the power vacuum that was left after Escobar's death and the rise of the Cali Cartel. However, this also tied into the trafficking routes that were used to smuggle drugs out of Colombia, mainly through Mexico.

In doing so, the decision to rebrand the show as Narcos: Mexico was very clever because it allowed the producers to explore the origins of the modern drug war by going back to its roots, beginning at a time when the Mexican trafficking world was a loose and disorganised confederation of independent growers and dealers.

Viewers witnessed the rise of the Guadalajara Cartel in the 1980s as Félix Gallardo (Diego Luna) takes the helm, unifying traffickers in order to build an empire. However, DEA agent Kiki Camarena (Michael Peña) was driven to stop Gallardo's empire, which led to a tragic chain of events unfolding, affecting the drug trade and the war against it for years to come.

Amazon's new documentary series The Last Narc explores the life and work of Kiki Camarena and the nefarious decisions that led to his death.

Throughout the four episodes, viewers follow the journey of Hector Berrellez, a highly decorated special agent who was assigned to lead the DEA’s investigation of Camarena’s murder.

With the help of several corrupt cops who once served as bodyguards to Mexico’s legendary drug lords, Hector digs deep to uncover the truth about a conspiracy involving top cartel leaders and the CIA.

The official synopsis states: "In 1985, DEA agent Enrique 'Kiki' Camarena is kidnapped, tortured and murdered by Mexican drug lords; special agent Hector Berellez reveals the truth about the conspiracy behind Camarena's murder that stretches from Mexico to Washington, D.C.

"The Last Narc follows former cartel insiders divulging the bone-chilling details behind the notorious murder and kidnapping of DEA Agent 'Kiki' Camarena. Through never before seen interviews, this four-part docuseries will unravel the story of Camarena, the drug cartel he infiltrated, and the narc who risked everything to discover the truth."
